Infection Causes And Treatment: Side Effect In Peritoneal DialysisDialysis includes peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. Dialysis is a lifesaving treatment for those with end stage renal disease. However, there are occasions when patients may have side effects from the treatment. Then what are causes and treatment of infection in peritoneal dialysis?

What are causes of infection?

Peritoneal dialysis need a small rubber tube, called catheter. A soft, straw-like tube catheter is positioned inside and outside of the body which aims to allow dialysis solution into and out of the abdominal cavity. In the process of filling, dwelling and draining dialysis solution, it has a great risk for infection from bacteria on the outside of the body.

Peritoneal dialysis has three types including continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, continuous cycler-assisted peritoneal dialysis and nocturnal intermittent peritoneal dialysis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, an exchange is done up to four or five times a day, seven days a week. The frequent handling of the catheter increases the risk for infection. Apart from infection, peritoneal dialysis can also cause fever, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain and skin infection which is a very common symptom. Therefore, preventing infection becomes urgent.

How to prevent infection in peritoneal infection?

You know the main cause of infection is the exchange of catheter, so patients with infection are advised to perform each exchange carefully. First, you should perform a exchange in a clean area. Then, keep the catheter area clean and touch it with washed hands or sterile gloves. In these cases, it is more likely to minimize the transfer of bacteria. What’s more, patients can apply an antibiotic preparation at their catheter exit site to decrease the risk for infection.

Knowing the causes contributes to the treatment of infection in peritoneal dialysis. Not only peritoneal dialysis but also hemodialysis both have side-effects,like headache, weakness and fatigue.
