A Necessary Test For Diagnosing IgA Nephropathy: Kidney Biopsy

Time:  2014-01-19 00:48
IgA Nephropathy is one of the many different kinds of inflammation affecting the glomeruli, known as glomerulonephritis. When someone has IgA Nephropathy, some of the glomeruli is blocked by a build up of protein antibodies called Immunoglobulin A(IgA). This will allow blood cells and protein to pass through the walls of the glomeruli into the urine. If you are suspicious to have IgA Nephropathy, a kidney biopsy is necessary for diagnosing IgA Nephropathy.

Why kidney biopsy is necessary for diagnosing IgA Nephropathy?

There are many tests which can diagnose kidney disease and are very effective. However, for IgA Nephropathy, kidney biopsy is necessary and a must.

One reason of kidney biopsy is the lesion which is caused by IgA Nephropathy appears in glomeruli filtration membrane. And it will cause more serious glomerular damage gradually. FSGS, Purpura Nephritis and other kidney diseases can also cause lesion in glomerular.

Many people may think since IgA Immunoglobulin accumulation in glomerular causes IgA Nephropathy, patients must have abnormal level of IgA Immunoglobulin in the body. Therefore, the abnormal level of IgA Immunoglobulin can be a foundation in diagnosing IgA Nephropathy. Actually, many other diseases can also cause accumulation of IgA Immunoglobulin in glomeruli, like purpura which can induce purpura nephritis to patients.

Kidney biopsy is one test to diagnose IgA Nephropathy exactly, so kidney biopsy is necessary for patients with IgA Nephropathy. Of course, apart from kidney biopsy, patients also need to accept other tests, such as urine test and blood test. Urine test is used to see if blood or protein is present in the urine. And blood test aims to check kidney function and show whether waste products are being removed out of the blood efficiently.

In summary, kidney biopsy is necessary and an exact test for diagnosing IgA Nephropathy. Other tests may also be needed if the results of these tests are not completely clear.
