How Is FSGS Treated

Time:  2014-01-07 16:11

How Is FSGS TreatedEffective treatment is needed with diagnosis of FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis), because it is the only way for patients to live a better life in the following days. Well, what is the effective treatment? Here we will introduce the general treatment for FSGS and hope you can know well about how it is treated in most of the cases.

In most of the cases, FSGS presents as Nephrotic Syndrome which is an illness marked by massive protein in urine, severe swelling, hypoproteinemia and hyperlipemia. Proteinuria is a symptom or clinical manifestation of FSGS. It appears due to severely damaged glomerular filtration membrane. However, clinical studies report that if proteinuria is not controlled well, much more protein will leak out and this will lead to the quick deterioration of illness condition. To get tight and prompt control, glucocorticoids like prednisone or immunosuppressive agents like cyclosporine A, cyclophosphamide and cellcept are always supplied. And for FSGS patients who have elevated blood pressure, usage of ACEI (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors) and ARBs (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers) also helps to reduce protein in urine.

All these medicines work quickly and tight control of proteinuria will slow down illness and prolong patients’ life span. However, long-term usage of these medicines will cause lots of side effects like digestive bleeding, weight gain, memory problem, myalgia and drowsiness and so on. Also, some of them suppress the immune system and makes patients susceptible to a variety of infections and immune diseases. Therefore, even though they are helpful, they are not a long-term solution.

In normal condition, proteins are kept in blood successfully through glomerular filtration membrane, but for FSGS patients, their glomeruli are injured for some reasons. In such a condition, proteins leak into urine and thus form proteinuria. Therefore, the real treatment should be able to repair injured glomerular filtration membrane. Medicines we mentioned above can stop protein from leaking into urine, but they can not repair kidney damages, so when FSGS patients stop taking medicines or reduce dose, illness relapses. So far no medicines have been reported to be able to revive necrotic kidney tissues, but there are indeed some medicines that have been proven to be able to repair damaged kidney intrinsic cells. Therefore, for FSGS patients who are tired of suffering from the side effects caused by immunosuppressive agents and glucocorticoids, they can try Chinese medicines.
