CreatinineWhat is creatinine?

Creatinine is a chemical waste product in the blood that passes through the kidneys to be filtered and eliminated in the urine. This chemical waste is a by-product of normal muscle contractions. In muscles, creatine will form creatinine through the irreversible reaction of enzyme dehydration. And then creatinine will be excreted out of your body via urine. Creatinine is small molecules and can be filtered by glomeruli. However, creatinine is hardly absorbed by renal tubule. In this case, almost all of the creatinine per day will be excreted through urine.

What is the normal level of creatinine?

Generally creatinine level in the blood remain unchanged from day to day because muscle mass usually stay the same. Different hospital has different standard of assessing creatinine. Generally speaking, the normal level of male is 0.6-1.2mg/dl and the normal level of female is 0.5-1.1mg/dl. For children, the normal level is 24.9-69.7umol/l.

High creatinine and chronic kidney disease

Creatinine is a measure used to assess kidney function. When there is kidney damage or kidney disease, and the kidneys are not able to filter waste efficiently. In this case, there will be likely a rise in creatinine level in the blood. High creatinine may be an indicator of kidney disease, but some other factors can also be the reasons of elevated creatinine level, including taking certain medicines, eating a lot of meat or building muscles through weight training or other exercise. These factors all can show higher amounts of creatinine, even in those who do not have kidney disease.

High creatinine level and stages of kidney disease

If high creatinine level is the main cause of kidney disease, different values of creatinine can indicate various stages of kidney diseases. In the following, we will analyze the different values of creatinine of each stage of chronic kidney disease.

Stage 1 kidney disease: creatinine level is less than 1.5mg/dl;

Stage 2 kidney disease: creatinine level is between 1.5-2.0mg/dl;

Stage 3 kidney disease: creatinine level ranges between 2.1-5.0mg/dl;

Stage 4 kidney disease: creatinine level ranges between 5.1-7.9mg/dl;

Stage 5 kidney disease: creatinine level is above 8.0mg/dl.

How to lower high creatinine level?

If creatinine level is lower than 8.0mg/dl, it is possible for to lower high creatinine level in blood by diet modification and taking some medicines. However, the patients have to consider dialysis once the two methods are not helpful. What’s more, immunotherapy is also an option for kidney disease patients. This is because immunotherapy can not only help remove waste products like creatinine from the body but also repair the damaged kidneys. As long as your kidney function is elevated above 10%, you may prolong the dialysis intervals. If your kidney function is elevated above 15%, it is likely for you to avoid kidney dialysis and live as a normal person. But you should know your kidney function can not be repaired to the original level.

Foods to be avoided when creatinine is high

1. High protein foods- reducing protein in the diet can help decrease the amount of waste produced. You can be allowed to get adequate protein from plant sources, such as soy and legumes, instead of animal proteins such as red meat, chicken pork.

2. Keep far away from high sodium foods- high sodium diet may lead to high blood pressure which is likely to worsen your illness conditions. Therefore, the first dietary change is to reduce sodium in the diet, including canned foods, pickles, bacon and processed foods and so on.

3. Avoid high glycemic foods- because uncontrolled diabetes can lead to kidney damage, people with high creatinine level should avoid foods that have a greater impact on blood sugar. The foods are whole grains, such as whole wheat, oats and barely. Sugar foods such as cake, cookies, piees and candy should be limited or avoided.

4. Eliminate diuretic foods- dehydration sometimes can also cause high creatinine. In this case, it is necessary for you to eliminate foods in your diet that will further dehydrate the body. You can drink regular water or fruit juice rather than caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and cola.

High creatinine is related to kidney disease, but it does not mean once your creatinine level is higher than normal, you must experience kidney disease. This is because other reasons can also lead to high creatinine. It is important for you to do tests when you have repeated high creatinine so as not to misdiagnose and delay the treatment.
