Learn More About ProteinuriaWhat is proteinuria?

-proteinuria refers that there is protein in your urine. In normal case, the kidneys act as filters and keep protein in your body. Very little or no protein appears in the urine. However, when kidney’s filters have been damaged by disease, which leads to protein leak into the urine, protein happens in the urine which may be an early sign of kidney disease.

Proteinuria and kidney disease

Proteinuria may be an early sign of kidney disease, but your doctor will do check you again so as to make sure your proteinuria was not triggered by some other factors such as lack of enough water.

If you are at a risk for kidney disease, other tests will be done including:

Checking your blood pressure

Checking your kidney function by a blood test to estimate glomerular filtration rate which is a measurement of kidney function.

An ultrasound exam of the kidneys

Which group of people need a test for proteinuria?

People who are at a high risk for kidney disease should need this test as part of routine checkups by the doctor. Those who are at the following group are at an increased risk for kidney disease, including:

1. People with diabetes or high blood pressure

2. People who are in a family history of kidney disease like polycystic kidney disease.

3. Kidney disease is more often seen amongst older people, so people who are older need this test.

4. Certain population group are at a high risk for kidney disease, including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans and American Indians.

What is the treatment of proteinuria?

Proteinuria treatment depends on identifying and managing its underlying cause. If the cause of protein in urine is kidney disease, proper medical management is essential. Otherwise, it will aggravate your condition and speed up the progression of kidney disease into renal failure. If proteinuria is mild and temporary, it is no need to take treatment. After some time, proteinuria will disappear.

For people with high blood pressure and diabetes, drugs are sometimes prescribed. The drugs are ACE inhibitors and ARBs.

Patients with chronic disease such as high blood pressure and diabetes need to take proper treatment to prevent the progressive kidney damage which is causing the proteinuria.
