What Causes High Creatinine in Chronic Kidney Disease

Time:  2014-02-03 08:42

What Causes High Creatinine in Chronic Kidney Disease Creatinine is a breakdown product of muscle, and most of the waste creatinine is expelled out of the body by way of urination. As it will not be reabsorbed back to blood by blood tubule, creatinine is usually used to measure kidney condition. Hence, you should pay attention to your creatinine level which is too high or too low because that could mean there are problems with your kidneys.

Our kidneys have strong metabolic ability and strong compensation, and half normal kidney function will be able to perform kidney work. When High creatinine level in Chronic Kidney Disease occurs, it will mean more than half kidney function has been damaged. Well, what’s on earth the causes of high creatinine level.

Creatinine includes serum creatinine and urine creatinine. Serum creatinine is the measurement of renal function clinically. And serum creatinine is determined mainly by glomerular filtration rate. When glomerular filtration rate decreases, creatinine concentration is elevated. The level of serum creatinine is higher than normal range which means kidney damages in most occasions. That is to say, serum creatinine can reflect the condition of renal parenchyma damage correctly, but it is not a sensitive indicator. When glomerular filtration rate decreases to 1/3 of normal people, the serum creatinine level begins to rise. Besides, when kidneys are damaged in mild stage, patients have no obvious discomforts due to kidneys’ strong metabolic ability. Patients have vomiting or nausea and dizziness. In this case, it may indicate severe kidney damage, and serum creatinine begins to go up obviously.

There are a series of harms of high creatinine, including:

1. Metabolic disorder of sodium: hyponatremia or hypernatronemia.

2. Metabolic disorder if potassium: hyperkalemia or hypokalemia.

3. Metabolic disorder of water, including polyuria, frequent urine at night, edema in whole body, high blood pressure and tiredness, etc.

4. Renal bone disease: bone pain of whole body.

5. Metabolic acidosis

Patients with high creatinine usually have poor appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting or nausea, tiredness, headache and even coma.

6. Circulation system lesion, digestive system lesion, blood system lesion and respiratory system lesion and so on.

High creatinine level in kidney disease is usually caused by impaired kidney function. Abnormal kidney function causes decreased glomerular filtration rate, so high creatinine level appear. Damaged kidney is one reason of high creatinine. Apart from this, some other causes can also lead to high creatinine, such as dehydration, tiredness, exercise and diet. In this case, once you have elevated creatinine, you should take diagnosis as soon as possible so as not to miss the best treatment time.
